[S1E6] A Woman's Place

The next day, as the delegates are leaving, Offred sees a chance to talk to the Mexican ambassador alone. The ambassador gives Offred a small package of chocolates from her village. Offred tells her she lied when she told them she was happy as a handmaid. She tells them the brutal truth about Gilead and accuses them of human trafficking. She pleads for their help, but the Mexican ambassador claims that she cannot help Offred and explains her own country's dire situation with infertility. When Offred is left alone with Mr. Flores, the ambassador's assistant, he informs her that Luke is alive and well in Canada. Offred had assumed he was killed when they were captured at the border (though she did not witness his death, she heard shots being fired and never saw him again). Mr. Flores knows Luke's full name, birthdate and birthplace, and also knows Offred's real name prior to meeting her, implying that what he says may be true. Mr. Flores offers to help Offred contact Luke.

Flashbacks detail Serena's and Fred's life before and during the beginnings of the Gilead movement. Serena is revealed to have been a conservative cultural activist during the "life before", with a passion and intelligence equal to that of her husband's (as well as a special fondness for movie popcorn). She wrote a book about her beliefs, titled A Woman's Place, which contained the famous line, "Do not mistake a woman's meekness for weakness", as Castillo recalls. Her public addresses about her belief system were often met with scorn and hostility from other women, who would boo and jeer. Commander Fred was one of the conspirators who devised the (alleged) "terrorist" attacks against Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court, effectively attacking all three branches of the United States government. Though Fred was reluctant upon receiving news that the attacks were given the confirmation to proceed (with the FBI closing in on several of the Sons of Jacob conspirators), Serena was confident that the staged attacks themselves would help quickly propel the envisioned society that was conducive to her own theocratic beliefs.

The council meeting (in the flashback scene) that Serena Joy is excluded from takes place in a U.S.-flagged office building, which implies the "security discussions" (mentioned by Putnam) are held on behalf of the U.S. provisional government following the DC attacks.

When Rachel finally gets a hold of American Express to authorize enough money to get her out of Morocco (interesting product placement where the company is a hero), Alan calls Anna to tell her Fortress has approved the loan. The only catch is that they will send someone to Germany to verify her trust and finances. This sends Anna into a drunken fit of playing tennis in a white bathrobe while holding a bottle of champagne.

Dot's Evans fandom is handy, as she also knows Copland was engaged to the production's leading lady, Leila (Christie Whelan Browne). Considering how indifferent Leila was to Copland's collapse, Robinson and Fisher question her only to learn it was a showmance: Walter's idea to sell tickets. She was keen to help since the production was her idea in the first place. (She wrote to Tarrant in London to come to Melbourne to direct it.)

All of which is to say that when Kristen comes knocking at David's door while he's in the middle of hallucinating geometry (get better hallucinations, nerd!), their relationship is already in a weird place. As she tries to explain that she figured out that the drawings Grace handed them are actually pieces of the codex that have been missing, she realizes David is like, so, so high. It's very charming and hopefully Kristen doesn't feel so embarrassed to be around him after her sex dream.

Lex Luthor arrives at the retirement center to visit Cassandra Carver, saying he's ready to see his future. Cassandra takes Lex's hand and sees a vision of Lex in a brilliant white suit and one black glove in the oval office of the White House. Then he is in a field of sunflowers. When he bends down to smell one of the flowers it dies. Then all the flowers die. A field of dry human bones replaces the flowers. Lex seems pleased. Lex holds out his arms as it begins to rain red blood. When Lex asks what it is that Cassandra saw, Cassandra doesn't answer. Lex realizes that she is dead. He calls for help and leaves the room, visibly shaken. When Clark comes in and sees Cassandra dead, he realizes that the death she had predicted when they first met had been her own.

The cabbie is handed to the police, while the group heads to the supposed meeting place with the traffickers. The building turns out to be the Azure King's hideout years ago, where he had blown himself up together with five detectives after his location was given to the police by Kunikida. One of the detectives was Rokuzō's father, and Kunikida believes himself liable for setting the bomb off due to his report. At that point, they receive a request to disarm a bomb from a client, who turns out to be the Azure Messenger. 041b061a72
