i purchased a home computer and want to activate it. i can't because of an old license that has expired. in windows 8.1, microsoft removed the old windows activation program. i can't activate my computer. when i try to, i get the following message: "windows cannot activate your computer. you must provide an activation code from your retail computer to continue."

i've just upgraded to windows 10 from windows 8.1 and i need to activate it. however, when i enter the product key and click activate, i get the following error: "the product key you entered is valid, but the computer on which you are trying to activate this product is not activated. you need to activate your computer before you can use this product."

1. be sure to call with your windows activation code, not a product key. if you call with a product key, you will not get the option to activate your device. if you call with a product key but do not have the activation code, the call will be unanswered.
